Quondam Tuesday Bruno

Let me introduce you to one of the Best Dogs that Ever Lived!

BRUNO
1999-2005
We got Bruno, formally known as Chumsky, at the Indianapolis Humane's  Society in 1999. We went in search of a companion for our dear Lucy, whom was elderly and needing some extra TLC.
Bruno came to live with us, and became Lucy's constant companion. When Lucy lost her sight, Bruno guided her along, giving her the best final days of her life.
When Bruno came to live with us, he was a BIG PUPPY. This was him the first day. At the Humane's Society there was a lot of attention around some smaller breed puppies scamping around playfully.  Bruno, was know as Chumsky at the time. His crate held a sign over it that said, "I'm cute too." He laid there looking so sad. People would walk by and say. "look at those paws, he's gonna be huge!"
We gladly accepted this big guy into our lives.
He loved us all so much.
Bruno w/ Lucy
yeah he was allowed on the couch
...and the bed
Bruno had the worse allergies I have ever seen for a dog. He was always sneezing outside and took allergy medicine. He preferred indoors in the spring & fall.
playing Happy Happy Hippo w/ Annie

Bruno w/ Baby Riley
6 months later still loving'
can I go too?
This beautiful huge Mutt was the joy of our lives. Everyone thought he loved them best. He spread his love to all. He chased the young boys into the pool every time they would "try" and push one of the girls in the pool. He loved to play and loved to cuddle.
We lost this Gentle Giant to  Lymphoma Cancer. Way to young.
He will always shine in our hearts.
Best Dog Ever.

the inevitable

We all know that eventually we will die.

There is no getting around this.

We do what we can to prolong our lives. We eat right, we exercise, we try to follow healthy lifestyles. Most do anyway.

(Some could care less and abuse their lives and bodies. Suicide is there as well.) That's another post!

Some people get lucky and seem to live great long happy lives. We have all seen the many Smucker people that get recognition for their 100th milestone on the Today Show.

That is why it is so strange to me when we are shocked of a death. I think it is more about a person being shocked that "They" will have to adjust to this loved one being out of their physical lives.

We are always surprised when a death is sudden, particularly with a young person. That is the hardest to understand. We are mostly saddened by our loss and the thought of not having the joy of seeing that young person get to experience life.

When a loved one has lived a long and happy life, I feel a sense of happiness. A relief for that person. Oh what a grand life. Imagine what they have seen & been able to experience.

When my Grandma Kitty died, I felt joy that I was Blessed to have had her in my life and for the life she was able to live. She was vibrate and brought joy to all around her. She wasn't terribly old though and I felt she still had so much to give. The pain of knowing I would no longer have insightful conversations with her, have a good belly laugh or to hold her close again was so hard. But, years have pass and she is still very much a part of me. I think of her daily and find myself thinking of what she would say or do if I was having a conversation, asking her opinion and I know I feel her presence.

Last week, my Uncle passed. Actually, he died somewhere between February 16th and 18th. He was 76, had several health issues and we all know it was a matter of time. BUT his cancer was being treated, and we were allude to believe he had several years.

The real problem of Art's death is his wife, my Aunt Nancy. She has been declining in health and has Parkinson's disease as well as Alzheimer's. Art has refused any help in her care and has been her sole health care provider. He seems to have taken good care of her physically. My uncle had alot of ...issues. He was always very controlling and full of alot of hatred. He has always been this way and for this, it was difficult to visit them. Scary to visit.

Concern for the inevitable didn't seem to sink in for him or really for the family. They tried. And I believe that they thought that plans were in place and it would not be quite the way it is.

Last Saturday, (2-4 days following Art's death), my Aunt was found in a crumbled mess at the bottom of the basement stairs. My uncle, deceased in their bed on the second floor. He must have realized that it may be coming. He had their driver's licences, important papers and such laid out on the table. Had been trying to finish their taxes, and left a door unlocked (something this gun happy man has never done before). Unfortunately, he did not make any phone calls to let anyone know he may be dying. We don't know how long Nancy was twisted on those basement stairs or how long he was dead. There is evidence that she was alone for some time prior to the fall. When they found her Saturday, and I saw her, I couldn't believe how she looked. I have never seen such fear in someones eyes. Days later, following her surgery, she is recovery well. She has a difficult time talking and her thought process is difficult (as it has for some time due to the Alzheimer's.) She needed to tell us what she knew. It was difficult for us, particularly her daughters, but she felt such a need to tell the story. Very heartbreaking. How she tried to wake him, tried to get him up. Not knowing what to do. Not remembering how to use a phone, or even go next door for help. It was a terrible scene.

I have been trying to help my cousins (whom all live out of town) get the arrangements made to bury their Father, and find the best care for their Mother. As well as decisions on the estate. Choosing not only a good fit but one that accepts their insurance. She will need to go into Rehab first then some kind of nursing home. When your family lives so far apart, what do you do? Where do you place your Mom? If she stays in Indy, she will have nieces, Brothers, Sisters to look after her. The daughters all live in different states...

Watching all this unfold has been so emotional and sad.

I told my sister & parents we need to sit down not just with a plan but a backup plan as well.

I am getting wordy and have so many ore thoughts in my head... BUT I must end for now as I have so much to do on this day I have taken off in preparation for addition out of town guest, and getting much necessary stuff done. (I also have to find an appropriate outfit for this big ass girl that has outgrown all her clothes!).

Let me end with this. One day you or a loved one will be in a similar situation as we are. What is your plan?
DON'T put it off. It is so emotional and difficult. The funeral home alone can make you feel so guilty in your choices. The rock bottom no thrills 1 hour service for my Uncle tomorrow is costing over $12,000.00.

LUCKY DOG!

Riley had a very successful surgery yesterday! My wonderful Vet was able to get out all the malignant tumor! She has lost a thyroid along with it, however, her larynx, vocal cords, arteries and nerves were unharmed! Other than a sour throat, a dozen external stitches, and the usual feel like crap after surgery.. feeling, she is recovering remarkably

Groggy but glad to see us, Sergio & I babied her all evening. We even slept in the living room with her to keep vigil watch over her. She had one tiny mishap where she ended up sitting on Sergio's head~ but they are both fine now! Was an interesting way to wake up with Sergio calling for help, while poor Riley was just confused from slipping off the couch onto his head!

Today, Riley's Happy Doggie Valium is making her feel good. At 120 pounds her pain killers are HUGE! That and her special dog bone that I got her from a Specialty Dog Store. (Seriously who buys these $9.00 dog bones regularly? I mean, yeah, I did, but for her recovery! The next one will be a regular one coming from PetSmart!)

Yea, she is a lucky Dog. Parvo, at a wee age, being the "fat girl" for years, and now Thyroid Cancer. She is a fighter! Oh, and by the way, I think she is ready to go on a diet!

Lucky Dog. Lucky Family!

Riley Girl

Riley Girl, also known as Riley Ann, Riley Gonzalez, Big Boned Girl, Sausage, & CHORIZO is our eight year old Bleu Tick Coonhound. She is an amazing "little" family member that we rescued from the Pound when she was 5 weeks old.
Unfortunately, she contacted Parvo. Fortunately, she had this family that was madly in love with her and forked out a thousand dollars plus to save her life. We then spoiled this big baby for the next several years.
Hounds are an interesting breed. They HOWL. When they smell something, see something, or want something. It is really loud, and funny to most. Embarrassing to us at times.
She is lazy. Her breed tends to nap alot.
She also is extremely strong. She can drag you and when she wants something she can and will do whatever it takes to get.
Riley is also a bit overweight. She should not weigh more than 75 pounds. Currently Riley is "down" to 112. (She likes to snack with Sergio!)
Last week I took her for her yearly check-up, shots, and grooming (she needed a pedicure big time!).
I have the worlds best Vet. I have been going to him since I adopted Inky back in 1974, so uhm, what, like 35 years. (OMGosh). I know this guy and after all these years can read him like a book. When I pointed out a concern about a swollen gland in her neck, I immediately got that feeling that he did not like what he was finding. She has a mass nearly the size of a tennis ball pushing on her voice box. Not a good thing. Samples were drawn and lab work waited on.
Riley will be going into surgery on October 15th to remove this Canine Thyroid Tumor that we are not sure yet if it is cancerous (it appears to be). Regardless to the cancer, it must be removed.
Obviously we are nervous about her upcoming surgery as well as what will be revealed.
It is also a costly surgery and she may require trips to Purdue for Radiation. I have a wonderful husband that loves this old dog as much as I. We will make it happen. My girls also love her dearly. She is actually Annie's dog.
So, Riley, you are our Christmas! And then some. But, it is always something. By now, I have learned, you take what you get, and make the best of it.
So chin up. Riley is happy. She has even been spotted PLAYING with the other dogs and, RUNNING (this is huge!). So, there is that chance that it is removed easily with no major hic-cups and no cancer!
However~ All my Dog Lovers out there~ Pray for our Big Boned Girl!

Update on LEEP Surgery

Okay, boring to some, but this is the best way to update about the LEEP surgery I had instead of making a bunch of calls.

The Good News is they feel they "got it all". The abnormal cells were at a high grade so it is very fortunate that they were able to go in and take the tissue out.

I am to now wait till March to have another pap then a recheck in May to see if my cervix has been able to grow normal healthy tissue back or if it's back a third time. Then, if they are back we will have to rethink some alternative treatment options (no brainer to me.. BYE BYE cervix! Thanks for all you have done for me but time to move on!)

I hate this wait. Am I growing healthy cells or cancerous cells? Will I continue to be a nervous Nelly wondering and anticipating each visit to the Doctor?

My cervix is recovering. Unfortunately my mensuration cycle came a day after the surgery that has caused additional discomfort and I am iron deficient again. I have Iron supplements but notice the expiration date is 1/03. Are they useless or just not as strong? They still smell strong.

The Bad News is a am being a baby. I hate this! I think I could handle knowing that we are on to the next step and having a hysterectomy. Than to continue this uncertainty. Okay, Maybe not. Who wants to have a major surgery and be out of commission. So forget that.

I just want to be healthy!

My Abnormal Cell Growth

Just an FYI update. It turned out to be High-Grade Dysplasia. So I am very grateful that they found it early and removed with the biopsy. I will go back in a couple of months for another check.
Don't forget to have your Pap! They are so important. By finding the precancerous cells early, I am able to watch it and stop it before it has an opportunity to stop me!
Also, get those Mammograms! That 30 minute discomfort is worth knowing you are A-Okay!

Can You Smell Him?

This isn't what you think.

I just got out of the shower and as I grabbed a fresh towel, I smelled a memory. It was Texas. My summers in Texas. My towel had that summer coastal smell for some reason.

Then I remembered something that happened 12 years ago. My Grandpa Texas was ill with Cancer. We had taken a week to visit with him & my Grandma. He wanted to take my girls to some places, give them some special memories of him. We then said our tearful goodbyes. My girls were too young to understand that this would be the last time they saw him. They absolutely loved him!

Then the next week, Annie was standing in the living room inhaling deeply. Again & again. Smiling as she giggled. I asked my 4 year old what on earth she was doing. She said, " He's here Momma! Don't you smell him?". I asked her who as I inhaled the room. She looked at me like I was crazy and said, "HoHo! Can you smell HoHo? He is here with us Momma!". HoHo is what my girls called Grandpa Texas. I said, "No, Baby, HoHo is in Texas, I wish he was here though." She smiled and said, "He IS here Momma!". Then she ran off. A couple of hours later, I got the call that HoHo had passed early that day.

Which brings me to today. As I struggle with much anxiety and stress lately, my memory smell getting out of the shower, makes me feel..safe. Loved. Watched over. I think that God sends my angels to bring me peace and make me have more faith.

bump, lump, abnormal cell growth...

I have had my share of medical "almosts". I always get lucky and get the "good news". I have yet been told something devastating. I am pretty good about yearly check ups & if something seems wrong, I have it checked out. I had a lumpectomy when I was 30 and also had a cyst removed that same year.

Common regular things we women go through from time to time. To be good to those we love, we try to make sure that we are healthy so we can take care of our loved ones. I try to stay educated and on top. Having daughters that are now young women, I feel it is important to set a good example and have them learn to take care of themselves.

Last month, I had a suspicious lump in my breast. Joy. I had to go to the hospital & have a more intense mammogram & ultrasound. Everything turned out fine. Just one of those little "build ups" that we will watch. Relieved I returned home with a clean bill of health.

A couple of days later, I received a call from the Doctor. It appears that my Pap came back abnormal as well. Okay, here we go again. They had me come in for a Colposcopy. Not fun, didn't help that I was nervous. He didn't like the way my "abnormal cell growth" looked and decided to do a Biopsy as well. Ouch! That isn't a pinch, that is a slicing of my Cervix! They tried to take the whole growth, just in case. Not too alarming, but it was worthy of removal.

So, now I sit waiting... Don't you love it when they say we should have results in a couple of days, and the days pass with no answer. I call yesterday, with a slight complication, no biggie, just "watch it". That is so comforting. Just tell me the results! Am I good to go? Or am I in for a little fight? I am up for the challenge. With God by my side, I am ready for anything.
